It is this beauty that attracts thousands of tourists, students and curious architects to our country over and over again! And we being in Rajkot city are proud of the monuments which resemble our history. Let’s talk about one such monument situated in the heart of the city.
Kaba Gandhi no Delo which literally means ‘Kaba Gandhi’s house’ is a place where Gandhiji’s father lived working as the Diwan of the Rajkot State. Even Mahatma Gandhi spent the early days of his life from the year 1881 to 1887 here. For millions of Gandhiji’s followers, this place is nothing less than a shrine.
It is a typical Saurashtra delatype house built in the year 1880-81. The house has been built following the old and customary styledarchitecture in Gujarat. Kaba Gandhi No Delo is a beautiful house that offers a mesmerizing glimpse into Mahatma Gandhi’s early world. The house is built in a Saurashtrian style of architecture, with arched gateways and courtyards.
Present day of the place:
The place is now a permanent exhibition offering a window into the past. It has been converted into a memorial called “Gandhi Smriti”. This museum displays and consists of photographs, objects and the belongings of the great Indian leader and Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The photographs that line the hallways of the house give a peek into his journey. The Mahatma’s passion for the handloom is preserved in the form of a small weaving school. Kaba Gandhi No Delo is currently managed by a Non-Government Organization (NGO), and on the top of that, the NGO runs classes in sewing and embroidery for young girls within the premises.
